Games to look forward to in 2018

After some time debating on how exactly to lay out the next few posts, I’ve decided to break them up into a few different categories.

For today, I’ll talk about games I’m excited about that have “hard” release dates, or games that I actually think will release around when publishers have said they will. This week will likely be shorter than usual, but I want to make sure to hit the dates I said I would.

Now that’s out of the way, let’s get started.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker’s Memory

Release Date: January 19, 2018

Will I Buy? Day 1.

I spent around 85 hours, on one playthrough, in the first game, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth and enjoy every second of it. I don’t imagine I’ll appreciate this game any less. However, I don’t think these games are particularly good and there are often oddities with the translation. But I’m all for the nostalgia factor. I was never a Pokemon kid growing up, my heart belongs to Digimon. I have no idea why though, I didn’t really watch the show past the second season, nor do I think the games have ever been good. They’ve always been fun though. I will appreciate being able to dive back into this game and spend countless hours mindlessly farming cool Digimon.

Monster Hunter: World

Release Date: January 26, 2018

Will I Buy? Maybe.

I have never played Monster Hunter, well besides the Monster Hunter: World beta that happened earlier this month. I have never owned a system where it was playable. But, after playing the beta and reading up on the style of the game I’m really excited to grind out awesome gear to slay interesting monsters. I like the gear and weapon variety, I tried out quite a few weapons in the training mode of the beta and found myself using the Dual Swords more often than not. “I wanna go fast.” I like the speed of those weapons compared to the others. My aversion to long story driven games doesn’t apply to grind oriented games, so Monster Hunter seems to fit that tune wonderfully.

Sea of Thieves

Release Date: March 20, 2018

Will I Buy? Depends on reviews.

I really want this game to be good. It looks like pure fun. Who doesn’t want to be a pirate? However, I’m not sold on its presentation so far. I think the game looks great, I just don’t think marketing is hitting its stride and getting the messaging in order for Sea of Thieves. I think it will also depend on the number of friends that will purchase and play. I’m put off by having to rely on people buying a buy in order to enjoy it myself. But, I’m looking forward to Sea of Thieves, I’m excited to see how it reviews more than anything.

Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

Release Date: March 23, 2018

Will I Buy? Depends on reviews.

As I’ve mentioned before, I love Level-5 games, starting them at least. The original Ni No Kuni falls into that love. I played it for around 20 hours on my original run and just drifted away from the game originally. It feels like I’m one of the few people who didn’t enjoy the Familiars. I feel like it just made combat awkward. They tried to do Pokemon with movement and I don’t think it worked. I’m glad they did away with it. Although, I’m worried combat will be a bit dumbed down now. Aesthetically the series is fantastic. Even without Studio Ghibli, I feel like Level-5 has kept that specific Studio Ghibli look. I want to like this game, there are just a few things I’m hesitant about and won’t be sure until I see how other people react to it.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Release Date: Q2 2018

Will I Buy? Day 1.

Although Rockstar riddled GTA online with microtransaction nonsense, I have faith in them to tell an excellent story. Red Dead Redemption was incredible from start to finish. No way this game isn’t at least as good as the single player. I am absolutely positive there will be microtransactions in this game, as long as it stays in the multiplayer, I will be content to buy and enjoy the game for its story.

Up Next: December 27, 2017. I’ll talk about games that have a 2018 release date that I actually think will release in 2018.

What are you looking forward to in 2018?

Happy Holidays and thanks for reading.
