Every time I think one of Sony’s development teams makes the “game of the generation” or best game in years another Sony studio shows them up almost instantly.
So far in 2018, we got God of War. In 2017 we got Horizon Zero Dawn. In 2016 we got Uncharted 4. In 2015 we got Bloodborne. Granted Bloodborne, which I’ve yet to play, was developed by both Japan Studio and FromSoftware but published by Sony. I’m going to call it a first-party title.
I’ve never really been a fan of Nintendo games, so Sony stands out in my mind as the best publisher and has the best developer stable of any company.
I’m not trying to deny the impact of Nintendo with the excellent releases of Mario and Zelda titles year after year.
I’m merely saying that Sony packs the biggest punch when it comes to technological achievement and developer quality. Every game looks better than the last and they seem to be pushing each other to get better and better.
We often get new IP or quality sequels from Sony that outclass the previous iterations and level up the studios themselves.
Santa Monica Studio last internally devegloped title was God of War Ascension which wasn’t really received that well.
Then they went away for a few years before releasing their own game, God of War 2018, which reimagines the gameplay and tells a new story of Kratos. As I mentioned in my review, I think that game is fantastic and sits beside The Last of Us and Horizon Zero Dawn in quality.
Santa Monica Studio has made some great games over the years, but nothing like the new God of War. Every aspect of the game emanates quality. My only qualm with the game was some minor issues with controlling his axe early on, but I think that was more of my own issue rather than the games issue.
Like their California counterpart, Guerrilla Games crushed expectations with Horizon Zero Dawn. No one expected a game that interesting or original from a “shooter” studio. They made a huge transition from FPS to an open-world action game.
And the golden team of development, Naughty Dog, make each game better and better than the last. Uncharted 4 was the best in the series, and The Last of Us is one of the best story-driven games ever. I expect nothing less than excellence from any of these three studios going forward. For better or worse.
In the future we know we’ve got Dreams to look forward too from Media Molecule, Days Gone from Bend Studio, Ghost of Tsushima from Sucker Punch, The Last of Us Part II from Naughty Dog.
Along with Sony published, Detroit: Become Human from Quantic Dream in a couple days and Spider-Man from Insomniac Games later this year.
And we’ve probably got Horizon Zero Dawn 2 and God of War 2 (the Norse version) at the end of the PS4’s life or at the beginning of the PS5.
Like many of the people talking about Days Gone prior to its release, I’m not really sure about how it will play out. But, I’ve grown to trust Sony’s first party studios as they all seem to be stepping up their game and releasing quality games.
I just need to find something to play after finishing God of War, I’m really not sure what will hit the same quality mark.
Maybe it’s time for Bloodborne?
