Top 5 Games of 2018: That aren’t God of War

Alright, so as I mentioned before, God of War was my favorite game of 2018. I think it might be fairly high on my favorite games of all-time list, but only after giving it more time to think about it. Besides God of War, here are my favorite games of 2018. I’ve reviewed each of the games on this list so I don’t think I’ll need to elaborate too much of them. I’m going to list in order of least favorite to most favorite out of these and number from six to two, since God of War sits at number 1.

TL,DR: At the end, as per usual. No spoilers.

6. Detroit: Become Human from Quantic Dream

I played this game once, straight through. I didn’t look at the other possible choices until after I beat the game. I wanted my playthrough to exist on its own and be “my” playthrough. I wanted to be a contained story and narrative rather than completing all aspects of the game. I really enjoyed the game overall. The characters and world looked great. The story was interesting and engaging.

Why its not higher? Walking sims or adventure games like these aren’t my preferred game and while I do enjoy them from time to time, I like my games to be more involved. I treat walking sims like a palette cleanse while I wait for something else or between games.

5. Red Dead Redemption 2 from Rockstar

I wanted to love this game beyond all others on this list. I fully expected and excellent and thats what we got. The world is enthralling and the characters made me want to spend more time with them. Great game, but not the masterpiece that the original was.

Why its not higher? I loathe being forced to do anything in a game. I hated traveling in this game specifically because I felt like I had to experience more of the game than I wanted or spend more time than I wanted. I’m sure like many people, I value my time and I felt like I was forced to spend more time in the game than really necessary. I think the story was WAY too long. It never ended and while some elements of the story amazed me, I was left with a bad after taste. I think the story was badly managed and designed.

4. Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games

This game leads the pack in sheer fun, I think. The movement and combat made most of the game enjoyable. The story is a great experience with some really fun characters, that many people have seen before.

Why its not higher? I beat and platinumed the game in like a week. I should not have done that. I finished the platinum feeling frustrated and disappointed with the experience because I found a few issues with crashes and bugs the more I played. The game was good, just not an amazing, or surprising experience.

3. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey from Ubisoft Quebec

Assassin's Creed® Odyssey_20181022195823.png

I think AC Odyssey sits with ACII and ACIV as some of the best in the series. I think AC Odyssey is the most impressive AC to date. The game surprised me more than I thought possible for a series I’ve played countless times before. The combat and exploration compelled me to keep playing. I loved the loot system, the weapons, and the armor. Kitting out my version of Alexios really was a blast.

Why its not higher? I had few technical issues that marred my experience slightly and I think the story falters in a couple places. Pacing was definitely issue. The story is awesome for the AC series, but compared to other games, not so much. I don’t think it was told as well as it could have been. I think the next game this team makes will be incredible.

2. Monster Hunter: World from Capcom

I’ve been aware of the Monster Hunter series for a long time, but it was never on a system that I wanted to play an action oriented game. I was so excited when this game got announced. I spent around 120 hours in this world and love every second of it. I was incredibly surprised by the depth and intricacies that really let you play your own way. I like the structure of the hunts and missions and really appreciate the replayability. I haven’t played in a few months but the game crosses my mind on occasion and I’m always tempted to go back.

Why its not higher? The only reason its not higher is because God of War is basically a perfect game for me. The only complaint I have about Monster Hunter: World is that sometimes I get really annoyed with the lack of drops from monsters. I needed a couple things to drop and they never did so I gave up. Anyway, I loved this game and I think I’ll go back eventually, but it will never surpass the quality of God of War.

6. Detroit: Become Human

5. Red Dead Redemption 2

4. Marvel’s Spider-Man

3. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

2. Monster Hunter: World

Thanks for reading. I’ll get a “looking forward” to 2019 on January 7.
